Preko

Village Preko

Preko is the transport and administration center of the island of Ugljan, with a population of 1286. It is the closest starting point for the excursion to St.Michael's fortress (265 m above the sea level). There is a 4,5 km long asphalted road that leads to the fortress. St. Michael's is a Venetian fortress that dates from the 13th century (it was built in the 6th century and rebuilt in the 13th century). The view from the fortress spreads over more than 200 islands of the Zadar archipelago and the Kornati National Park. Only about 80 meters away from Preko lies the idylic islet of Galevac (Školjić).

The nearby beach "Jaz" carries the blue flag - a symbol of the clear water. The 11th century Romanesque church of St. John is situated on the eastern side of the locality, near the ferry dock. The Church of Our Lady  of the Rosary - an Early Christian church (formerly called St. Andrew's Church, was restored and dedicated to the Lady of Rosary in the 18th century) is placed in the center of the location.
